Spiny shrub, 1-1,5 m; stems with 2-3 spines at the nodes. Leaves 4-5 x4-6,5 cm; sparsely pubescent or glabrous, base truncate or subcordate. Flowers in axillary clusters of 1-3, hermaphrodite, pale green, sometimes pinkish; hypanthium hemispherical; sepals 5-7 mm, reflexed; petals white, c. ½ as long as sepals. Fruit globose to ovoid, c. 10 mm diam., green, yellow or purplish-red, usually hispid. Fl. 5-6. Described from N. Europe.
Native in W., C. & S. Europe, Caucasia and N. Iran; extensively cultivated for its fruit and widely naturalized elsewhere. In Turkey probably native in N.E. Anatolia.
