Differs from M. verticillatum in the absence of turions, in the smaller leaves, usually arranged in whorls of four, in the bracts of all but the lowers whorls which are entire and c. as long as the flowers, and in the dull red petals of the male flowers. Fl. 5-7. Fresh water: lake margins, rivers, water channels, etc., 100-1900 m.
