Rhizomatous aquatic perennial; stems 30-300 cm; clavate turions with closely adpressed leaves produced in autumn as perennating organs. Leaves 2,5-4,5 cm, usually longer than the internodes and in whorls of 5, simply pinnate with 25-35 segments. Bracts pinnate or pectinate, often much exceeding the flowers, subtending whorls of five flowers. Male flowers with greenish-yellow, rarely reddish petals, c. 2,5 mm. Nutlets subglobular, c. 2 mm. Fl. 7-8. Lakes, rivers, etc.
