Stems 20-60 cm, erect from creeping rhizomes, usually unbranched. Leaves 4,5-9,5 cm, oblong to elliptic or ovate, evergreen. Sepals 1-2 cm, markedly unequal, elliptic to suborbicular, entire, persistent. Petals 2,5-4 cm, markedly asymmetric. Stamens with reddish anthers. Capsule c. 20 mm, ovoid, on a reflexed peduncle. Fl. 5-8. Shady woods and banks, 30-1200 m.
