Stems 15-52 cm, erect. Leaves 5-28 mm, ovate or ovate-triangular to elliptic or linear, cuneate to cordate-amplexicaul, with a regular row of intramarginal black glands and sometimes superficial ones. Sepals ± unequal, usually broadly imbricate, broadly ovate or broadly oblong-elliptic to suborbicular, apiculate or acute to rounded, entire or rarely with margin eroded-denticulate, usually with black glands. Petals 10-26 mm, usually with superficial black dots. Capsule 5-10 mm, subglobose to globose.
A variable endemic species closely related to H. olympicum and showing clinal variation from west to east. The cline can be divided into three subspecies:
1-Leaves ovate, cordate-amplexicaul; petals 20-26 mm; sepals 15-18 mm, apiculate subsp. lycium
1- Leaves triangular-ovate or elliptic to linear, cordate to cuneate; petals 10-20 mm; sepals 4-11 mm, acute to rounded
2- Leaves triangular-ovate to triangular-lanceolate, cordate-amplexicaul; sepals 7-11 mm, suborbicular subsp. subcordatum
2- Leaves elliptic to linear, cuneate; sepals 4-6 mm, broadly ovate to lanceolate subsp. polyphyllum
