Corm tunic membranous with ± parallel fibres. Stem 35-65 cm. Leaves 2 or, if 3, uppermost very reduced, lamina 4-12 mm broad, not glaucous, veins irregularly spaced. Spike dense, 3-7-flowered, secund. Perianth deep violet-purple, rarely pale lilac or whitish, lower lateral segments sometimes paler with dark markings; tube distinctly curved, posterior 8-11 mm, anterior 13-17 mm; segments elliptic-obovate to ovate-spathulate , narrowly long-clawed; upper 25-28 x 14-18 mm, lower 25-30 x 9-12 mm, projecting further forward than upper in vivo. Anthers 8-14 mm, filaments 14-16 mm. Style to 3.5 cm, with equal 4 mm stigmas dilated at tips. Capsule obovoid, 1-1.7 cm; seeds 2.5-3.5 xc. 1.5 mm, brown, unwinged. 2n = 60. Fl. 4-8. Limestone slopes and valleys, marshy places by streams and glaciol lakes, alpine pastures, water meadows, edge of Picea forest, 400-2900 m.
