Perennial, densely or rarely laxly caespitose. Stems 50-120 cm, basal sheaths usually dark reddish-brown. Stems and leaves with 10-20 strong ridges; pith interrupted. Lowest bract long, inflorescence pseudo-lateral, lax or rarely contracted, many-flowered. Perianth segments narrowly ovate, 2.5-4 mm, acuminate, outer ones longer. Stamens c. 1/2 x perianth; anthers 0.8-1 mm, 1-1.5 x filaments. Capsule exceeding or rarely equalling perianth, ovoid-trigonous to ellipsoid, acute to obtuse, mucronate. Seeds c. 0.5 mm, without appendages. Fl. 4-8. Fens, wet grassland, shores, open damp places, s.l.-2600 m.
