Perennial with short-noded rhizome, caespitose. Stems 10-80 cm, with 2-3 basal leaves. Leaves flat, often convolute; auricles long, thin, often incomplete in dried material. Inflorescence usually lax, 5-40-flowered, 2 lowest bracts long and leaf-like. Perianth segments 3.5-4 mm, outer ones slightly longer, aristate. Anthers 0.7-0.8 mm, half as long as filaments. Capsule shorter than perianth, broadly ovoid, obtuse to truncate, with short mucro. Seeds 0.3-0.4 mm, with 1 short appendage. Fl. 6-8. Bare soil, moist places, 10-200 m.
Probably native only in E. temperate N. America. Introduced in many temperate areas and spreading.
