Perennial, caespitose, with elongate stolons. Stems 15-30 cm, with usually reddish basal sheaths, 1-3 sub-basal and 2-3 cauline leaves. Leaves 1.5-4 mm broad, hairy at base and on margins. Inflorescence lax, with erecto-patent branches; flowers borne singly at ends of branches, 5-35. Perianth segments 3.5-4.5 mm, subequal, ovate, narrowly tapering, acuminate, finely lacerate, brown to chestnut-coloured with broad scarious margins. Anthers 0.9-1.2 mm, 1-2 x filaments. Capsule equalling or slightly exceeding perianth, ovoid to spheroidal with conical apical part. Seeds 1.5-1.8 mm; caruncle 0.6-0.9 mm, conical, obtuse. Fl. 3-7. Dry stony slopes, forest and scrub, s.l.-2250 m.
