Perennial with creeping rhizome. Stems 30-70 cm, with several basal and 3·4 cauline leaves. Basal leaves to 20 cm, 2-8 mm broad; lower cauline to 20 cm, upper short. Leaves hairy at base and on margins. Inflorescence with many unequal branches, flowers in 4-15, 5-10-flowered heads. Bracts lacerate-hairy. Perianth segments 4.5-6 mm, ovate, acuminate-cuspidate, with dark brown centre and broad scarious margins. Capsule 3.5-4.5 mm, globose, with short mucro. Seeds c. 2 mm, with very small caruncle. Fl. 3-5. Woods, macchie, s.l.-900 m.
