Perennial, rhizome thick, branching, forming terminal perennial rosettes to 40 cm with 4-10 mm broad leaves. Stems 30-80 cm, Leaves hairy at base and on margins; cauline leaves 3-5, with long sheaths and 1-5 cm laminas. Inflorescence usually lax, of 20-100 heads; heads 2-6-flowered. Perianth segments 3-4.5 mm, narrowly ovate, cuspidate, light brown to chestnut-coloured, scarious at apex. Capsule 3-4 mm, ovoid, triquetrous at apex, reddish to blackish-brown, mucronate. Fl. 5-7. Damp slopes and streambeds in forest, 800-2300 m; calcifuge.
