Stems subglabrous to puberulent, 30-70 cm, branched, flexuous. Leaves ovate-elliptic, 20-100 x 10-40 mm, acute or shortly acuminate, crenate-serrate, subglabrous, Bracts obovate-orbicular, 4-5 mm, cuspidate or mucronate, ± longer than flowers and arranged in a double row opposite them. Calyx 1.5-2 mm, pale brownish-pink, pubescent. Corolla lilac, 3-4 mm. Nutlets smooth or verrucose-rugose. Naturalised.
Native of C. & E. Asia; cultivated for ornament and naturalised in Europe & S.W. Asia.
