Perennial. Stems 20-90 cm, sparingly puberulent to shortly pilose, or subglabrous. Leaves 20-90 x 10-40 mm, ovate-lanceolate to elliptic, coarsely dentate or crenate, less commonly pinnatisect at base or ± throughout their length, lobes 1-7 mm deep. Bracteoles 2-5 mm. Calyx 3-4.5 mm, teeth 1.5-25 mm, spinescent at apex. Corolla white with small dark purple spots, c. 4 mm; staminodes reduced or absent. Fl. 6-10. Wet places by . streams, pools, lakes and marshes, rarely drier banks, often in shade, 10-1680 m,
Most of Europe, C. Asia, W. Syria, Iran. Euro-Sib. element. Variable in leaf morphology and indumentum. Numerous infraspecific taxa have been recognised.
