Glabrous annual or short-lived perennial, 30 cm-1 m. Leaves orbicular-ovate, coarsely palmately lobed or serrate, shortly petiolate. Bracteoles 8-10 mm. Verticillasters c. 8-flowered. Calyx persisting in fruit; tube 10-11 mm, with papilliform glands especially towards base; upper lip rigid, 18-20 mm, incl. a single stout spine 4-8 mm; lower lip c. 15 mm incl. 5-7 unequal spines 4-10 mm. Corolla pale pinkish-violet or white, 20-30 mm, upper lip broadly emarginate or shallowly bifid, villous. Fl. 5-6. Stony ground , c. 300-600 m.
