Usually shorter than P. vulgaris L., from which it differs by narrower leaves, more abundantly hairy, upper usually ± deeply pinnatifid or lyrate; upper lip of calyx distinctly dentate, sinus between lateral and middle tooth more deeply notched; corolla larger, 12-16 mm, creamy white, rarely lilac or pale blue-violet. Nutlets larger, 2.5 x 1.5 mm. Fl. 5-7. Broad-leaved and coniferous forest, meadows, fields, etc., s.l.-1800 m. 
N. Africa, Europe, S.W. Asia. Euro-Sib. element. Closely related to P. vulgaris L. and treated by some authors merely as a variety.
