Hirsute, glandular-pubescent perennial. Stems 30-100 cm, erect, sparsely to densely hairy. Leaves cordate-ovate, 3-9 x 2-6 cm, acute, crenate or crenate-serrate, all ± long-petiolate. Verticillasters 6-flowered, ± crowded in a tapering inflorescence. Calyx 6-9 mm, glandular-pubescent; teeth equal, 2-3.5 mm, equalling or slightly shorter than tube. Corolla dark, dull reddish-purple with white markings, 12-16 mm, upper lip 35 mm, lower 5-8 mm. Fl. 6-9. Picea and Fagus forest, mixed woods, gravelly slopes, banks, wet places, s.l.-2440 m.
Temperate Eurasia & N. America. Euro-Sib. element; in Turkey confined to Euxine province.
