Bulb to 2 cm diam., often with bulblets. Stem 5-15 cm, smooth. Leaves 4-5, glaucous, alternate, lowest 2.5-10 x 0.6-2 cm, broadly lanceolate to lanceolate. Flowers 1; perianth narrowly campanulate, dark purplishbrown inside and out, with glaucous bloom outside; outer segments 1.2-2.5 x 0.4-0.8 cm, ovate-Ianceolate, usually acute; inner 0.5-1.8 cm broad, obtuse. Nectaries 2-5 x 1 mm, lanceolate, green, 1mm above perianth base. Filaments 6-9 mm, stout, densely papillose. Style 8 mm, 3-fid; branches 1-2 rom, papillose. Fl. 4-7. Mountain steppe, usually by late snow patches, 1300-3000 m.
