Tunics papery, with ring of hairs around basal plate, sparsely hairy elsewhere. Stem and pedicel puberulous to pubescent, rarely glabrous. Leaves 3, 14-20 x2.5-4.5 cm, ovate-lanceolate, channelled, undulate or crispate, glaucous, usually finely puberulous above. Flowers shiny orange-red to scarlet, paler to bluish red outside; blotch 1-1.5 cm, black, pointed or rounded. with or without yellow rim. Outer perianth segments 48-75 x 15-25 mm, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, acute to acuminate; inner 47-73 x 18-28 mm, ovate to obovate, abruptly acute to rounded and apiculate. Filaments 7-9 mm, black; anthers 10-15 mm, purplish; pollen olive green. Ovary glaucous, hardly narrowed below the large wide stigmas. Fl. 4-5. Weed of cultivation.
