Perennial. Stems tall, with a homomorphic, velutinous indumentum of small stellate hairs. Leaves cordate-orbicular, greyish, softly hairy with stellate hairs above and beneath, unlobed, or lobed to less than ½  of the length of the blade. Involucre short, less than ½  as long as the calyx. Sepals conspicuously striate in flower. Petals pink, crimson, purple, white or yellow, 28-35 mm. Mericarps unwinged, not conspicuously rugose, hairy all over the back. 2 subspecies may be recognised:
1. Leaves ± unlobed or very shallowly lobed subsp. striata
1. Leaves clearly 3-5-lobed subsp. rufescens
