Erect sparsely hairy biennial; stems 10-150 cm, lacking red spots. Cauline leaves lanceolate, base cuneate. Flowers erect in bud, yellow, opening at dusk; calyx green, sepal tips appressed in bud; hypanthial tube 18-44 mm; petals 24-30 mm; style 3-17 mm. Capsule c. 2 x 0·5 cm, cylindrical. FI. 6-7. Naturalized.
Native in N. America; widely naturalized throughout most of Europe.
