Biennial herb. Stem 70-100 cm., erect, villous; hairs with a red spot at their bases. Basal leaves lanceolate to oblanceolate, 12-30 x 3-5 cm.; cauline leaves narrowly elliptic to lanceolate, all leaves pubescent with undulate margins. Bracts 1-3 x 0.7-3.4 cm., lanceolate to narrowly ovate. Inflorescence simple or branched. Hypanthial tube 3.5-5 cm long. Sepals 3-4 cm long, spreading, red-striped along midrib. Petals light yellow, 3.5-5 cm, obcordate. Stigma exceeding the stamens. Capsule 2-3 x 0.5-0.6 cm., clavate and tapering towards apex, pilose hairy. Seeds many, 1.6 x 1.4 rnm., prismatic, winged. Native of America. Locally common in W and C. Europe. Cultivated for ornament in Europe and widely naturalized, usually on disturbed ground.
