Vigorous plant, 20-90 cm tall. Lower leaves mostly basal, ovate-lanceolate, upper leaves becoming smaller, lanceolate. Spike elongate, ± 2/3x as long as total height, with 8-30 flowers. Flowers lax, oblique to spreading horizontally. Bracts about 2x as long as ovary. Perianth segments ovate , forming a large hood, green outside, sometimes tinged red-brown, veined brownish-red inside with brownish-red spots. Labellum strongly three-lobed, slightly domed, olive-green, rarely brownish-green, with red papillae on pale surface at base; central lobe 40-70 mm long and divided to 20 mm at apex, about 4-7x as long as two lateral lobes, not much twisted, two lateral lobes 7-10 x 8-11 mm, broadly triangular, margin undulate to toothed, olive-green. Spur saccate, directed downwards, c. 3-4 mm long. Faintly scented. Fl. 5-6. Oak scrub, grassy meadows and open oak and pinewoods; on dry calcareous soils. 800-1200m.
