Plant 20-40 cm. Basal leaves 3-5, oblong-lanceolate, ± acute, to 8 x 2 cm, ascending, upper sheathing. Spike up to 40-flowered; bracts minute, membranous. Sepal hood c. 6-7 mm long horizontally. Sepals and petals green, with reddish-brown margin. Labellum 3-lobed, man-like, c. 12 mm, hanging vertically, yellowish, lobes ± suffused with orange to brown; lateral lobes near base, linear, ± connivent, middle lobe longer, divided into 2 linear segments, sometimes with a minute tooth in the notch. Ovary sessile, twisted. Fl. 3-4. Grassy slopes, macchie, on basic soils, s.l.-800 m.
W. & C. Europe, Mediterranean area, reaching its eastern limit in Turkey.
