Plants 20-30 cm. Leaves densely spotted, striped or suffused with purple towards base. Spike short, dense, 5-8-flowered, sometimes elongate with up to 15 flowers. Bracts scarcely exceeding or slightly shorter than flowers, dingy purplish-maroon. Sepal hood ashgrey-purplish outside. Petals with roundish base, margins slightly crenulate-undulate, blackish-purple, loosely hanging downwards. Hypochile shorter, front margins overlapping with epichile. Beak of column to 7 mm. Fl. 4-5. Macchie, phrygana, wasteland, grassy places, wet meadows on calcareous and schistose soil, mainly in the littoral region, nr s.l.
