Plant slender. 15-35 cm tall. Stem thin, streaked purple below, with a few scale leaves above ground, green, tinged reddish in inflorescence region. Leaves linear-lanceolate, green to reddish-green, lower leaves spreading to reflexed, middle ones erect and grooved, upper becoming bract-like and tinged red-violet. Spike quite lax. usually 5-10 cm long with 2-6 flowers, with two parallel ridges at base of labellum, Bracts broadly lanceolate, slightly exceeding sepal hood. tinged purple. Perianth segments tapering, veined, curving together to form a hood, pale grey-green to whitish-green or red-violet, held obliquely upwards. Labellum 17-23 mm long, 2-lobed, brownish-red. Hypochile 6-11 x 7-12 mm, wedge-shaped at base; lateral lobes erect and hidden inside hood, reddish-violet to violet-black. Epichile 8-13 x 3-5 mm, narrowly Ianceolateto oblong-lanceolate, pendent to strongly reflexed, reddish-brown, weakly pubescent at base. Fl. 4. Open pinewoods, macchie, phrygana, meadows and scrub, on base-rich soils, s.I.-700 m.
