Stem 10-50 cm, glandular-pilose. Flowers lax at base of spike. Bracts usually equalling flowers. Calyx halves undivided or bidentate; teeth usually long subulate-acuminate, often diverging, 3-veined near base, 1-veined near tip, glandular-pilose, usually equalling corolla tube. Corolla cylindrical, 10-18 mm, slightly curved forward, yellowish-white, upper lip light violet or bluish, usually chiefly on veins, glabrous or glandular-pilose; whole dorsal line usually curved; limb glabrous. Stamens inserted 2-3 mm above corolla base, filaments usually sparingly pilose near base, anthers shortly acuminate. Stigma usually purple or violet, rarely lilac, yellow, light brown or white. Fl. 4-6. Often on Leguminosae, s.l.-2000 m.
Mediterranean area from Madeira to N. Iraq and Transcaucasia, extending northwards to Britain and southwards to E. Africa . Introduced in N. America and New Zealand.
