Perennial. Stem 15-40 cm, unbranched, glabrous, ridged, usually 1flowered. Leaves divided into many linear segments; segments less than 5 mm wide , glabrous above, pubescent beneath. Flowers 6-8 cm diam, Sepals 6, greenish-red, persistent. Petals 8, 3-4 x 1.5 - 2.5 cm, bright red. Filaments red, anthers yellow. Follicles 2-3, c. 2 cm, tomentose. Seeds long ovoid, brownish black, shining surface, Fl. 4-5. Dry open places, in fallow fields, 250 m.

S.E. Europe to the Balkan Peninsula: Romania, Jugoslavia, Bulgaria, S. and C. Russia.
