Papaver argemone

Subsp. argemone: Annual herb. Stems decumbent to erect, usually branched, spreading setose below, 20-50 cm. Leaves pinnatisect to bipinnatisect, with mucronate, linear-lanceolate segments. Flowers 1,5-3cm in diameter. Petals obovate-oblong, pale red, with a black-purple blotch at the base, c. 2 cm. Staminal filaments clavate. Capsule long-clavate to oblong-cylindrical, sparsely setose. Fl. 4-6. Fields, roadsides, cultivated ground, etc., s.l-2000 m.
Ssp nigrotinctum: Differing from subsp. argemone and subsp. davisii  by its buds less than twice as long as broad, orange-red petals usually less than 25 mm, and especially by its short, generally ellipsoid capsules, rarely longer than 15 mm and never more than 4x as long as broad; 2n = 14. Fl. 3-5. Weed or ruderal on sand  or calcareous rocks s.l. 
Ssp davisii: Differs from subsp. argemone by its broader buds , less than twice as long as broad; large, deep crimson petals 2,6-4 mm. FI. 4-5. Weed or ruederal or in open vegetation on sand, calcareous or igneous substrata, nr s.l-500 m.
