Annual. Stems 30-45 cm, erect, branched, spreading setose below. Leaves pinnatisect, the segments oblong-lanceolate or linear-lanceolate , entire or somewhat dentate. Peduncles adpressed setose. Flowers 4-5 cm in diameter, petals broader than long, purple or crimson, with or without a black spot at the base. Capsule elliptic-oblong, 1-1,5 cm. Disc flat. Stigmata 5-10, keeled, the sinuses between the lobes extending almost to the centre of the disc. Fl 6. Cultivated ground, 1300-1600 m.
S. Russia, Caucasia, N., W. & S. Iran, Syrian Desert. Ir.-Tur. element. Easily distinguished from all other Turkish poppies by the deep sinuses between the lobes of the disc.
