Perennial with branched woody stock producing wiry epigeal stolons. Stems ascending, 5-15 cm at anthesis, to 35 cm in fruit. Basal leaves forming rosettes, to 25 x 8 cm, obovate to elliptic, obtuse to emarginate, attenuate into petiole; cauline to 12 x 3 mm, linear to narrowly elliptic, sessile. Capitulum terminal, 10-20 mm diam.; involucral bracts lanceolate. Calyx divided to c. 0.7, lobes narrowly lanceolate, acuminate, ± erect. Lower lip of corolla divided to c. 0.7 into 3 linear segments, upper divided almost to throat of tube into 2 linear segments. Fl. 4-7. Rocky and grassy slopes, forest clearings, on limestone, serpentine and volcanic rocks, steppe, 200-2470 m.
