Stout, glaucous perennial, 30-75 cm. Leaves alternate, dense, thick, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 25-45 x 10-30 mm, rounded or semiamplexicaul at base. Raceme elongate, dense, large-flowered. Bracts lanceolate, usually as long as calyx but deflexed. Pedicels 1-3 mm, stout. Calyx lobes ovate to lanceolate, rounded or cordate at base, herbaceous, 11-15 x 4-6 mm, acute. Corolla bright yellow, 25-35 mm, lower lip with a very protuberant hairy palate and large rounded lateral lobes; spur conical-attenuate, 16-20 mm, straight or curved downwards. Capsule spherical, c. 8 mm, subequal to calyx. Seeds compressed-tetrahedral, rugulose, 1.3-1.5 mm, angles narrowly winged. Fl. 5-7. Rocky calcareous slopes, steppe and fallow fields, 730-2250 m.
