Like P. scabra but lower part of stem usually glandular-pubescent; internodes 1-4.5 cm; leaves linear-lanceolate or linear, 7-40 x 2-3 mm, entire or sometimes irregularly dentate, obtuse; peduncles 1-3.5 cm, purple, minutely glandular-hairy or densely puberulous; spikes 0.5-1.5 cm, ovoid; all bracts similar in shape, ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate-acuminate, glandular-hairy, lower c. 3.5-4 mm, upper c. 4.5 mm; sepals obliquely oblanceolate, 2.5-3 mm, keel and margins glandular-hairy ; keel of anterior sepals broader than others; corolla tube 3-3.5 mm, strongly rugulose, lobes ovate, acute; capsule broadly ellipsoid; seeds cymbiform, shining rusty brown. Fl. 3-6. Wet meadows, damp hillsides, fixed sand dunes, railway banks, fields, Sarcopoterium phrygana, s.l.-900 m.
Mediterranean area, S.W. Asia eastwards to Pakistan.
