Perennial, 15-40 cm, with several or many rosettes; stock laxly branched. Leaves 20-200 x 2-3.5 mm, flat, linear, entire or sparsely toothed, ±canaliculate, glabrous or subglabrous. Scapes 10-30 cm. Spikes 1-9 cm, dense. Bracts ovate-elliptic, lower c. 5 mm, concave, with strong thickened keel, apex ciliate, upper 2 mm. Sepals 2-2.5 mm, anterior elliptic-ovate, ± concave, glabrous, upper margin ciliolate or dentate; posterior ovate, very concave, keel narrow. Corolla lobes 1-1.5 mm. Capsule conical. Ovules 3-4, but only 2 seeds maturing. Seeds elliptic, rusty-brown, hilum side ± concave. Fl. 5-8. Lake shores, sandy and stony places, alpine meadows, maritime habitats, marshes, s.I.-2400 m.
