Annual, 10-40 cm, branched below, branches erect, ascending or decumbent. Stem hirsute, glandular-pubescent. Lower internodes 1-5.5 cm, upper much longer. Leaves opposite, 20-70 x 1-3 mm, linear or linear-lanceolate, hard, curled, hirsute, apex obtuse. Peduncles 1.5-6.5 cm. Spikes 0.5-2 cm, ovoid-ellipsoid, dense. Lowest 2 bracts c. 4.5-10 mm, rotund-ovate, concave, apex acuminate or rostrate, keel hard; upper bracts 2.5-3 mm, ovate-orbicular or broader than long, apex neither acuminate nor rostrate. Anterior sepals 3-3.5 mm, ovate-spathulate, obtuse, posterior ones 3-3.5 mm, ovate or ovate-lanceolate, very much more concave than anterior, keel hirsute. Corolla tube ± rugulose; lobes c. 1.5 mm, narrowly ovate. Capsule ellipsoid. Seeds 2, c. 2 mm, ellipsoid. Fl. 5-11. Sea and lake shores, sandy places, beaches, pathsides, steppe, rocky slopes, s.l.-1250 m.
