Annual, 3-15 cm, Leaves rosulate, linear to linear-lanceolate, 10-90 x 0.8-3 mm, entire or irregularly and remotely denticulate, glabrous to sparsely pubescent. Sparsely ciliate at margin. Scapes 1-several, ± erect, shorter or longer than leaves, densely adpressed-pubescent. Spikes cylindrical, 10-55 x 3.5-5 mm, dense. Bracts ovate, 2-3 mm, acuminate, with thick, broad, green keel, ± glabrous. Sepals free, unequal; anterior ovate-elliptic, 2-3 mm, with broad, green keel and ± narrow, scarious, ciliate margin; posterior sepals plicate-concave, with broad, 2.5-3.5 mm, scarious, ciliate margins; keel green, with a conspicuous, broad, scarious, ciliate wing. Corolla c. 2 mm diam. tube 2-3 mm, pubescent; lobes broadly lanceolate, acuminate, with central brown band. Capsule ovoid, 1.5-2 mm, 3-locular, seeds 3-6, ellipsoid, c. 1 mm, Fl. 2-10. Seashores, dry rocky places, wasteground, fallow fields, roadsides, s.l.-180 m.
