Perennial with creeping rhizome, blackening when dry. Stems always coinpletely glabrous, decumbent to ± ascending, 10-20 cm, repent at base, usually slightly branched, thick, solid, often red, pruinose. All leaves shortly but clearly petiolate, fleshy, dark green, shining, completely glabrous; petiole 2-4 mm; lamina broadly oblong, ovate or subelliptic, 15-35 x 8-20 mm, base rounded-truncate, apex obtuse-rounded, rounded or subtruncate, margins denticulate, subserrulate or subentire. Racemes 2-6, 10-15-flowered, always completely glabrous. Fruiting pedicels 3-7 mm, 0,8-1,5 x bracts, subpatent, arcuate-erect or suberect. Calyx 2-2,5 mm in flower. Corolla deep or bright blue with white centre, 5-6mm diam. Style 1,5-3 mm.,Capsule slightly transversely broadly;elliptic or orbicular, rarely broadly elliptic, inflated, 3-4 x 3-4 mm, equalling calyx , apex not or slightly emarginate. Seeds 40-70, broadly-elliptic, plano-convex, 0,5-0,6 x 0,4-0,5 mm, with dot-like chalaza. 2n= 18. Fl. 5-10. Streams, marshes, ditches, wet meadows, preferably in running water, 20-3200 m.

Differing from subsp. beccabunga by its larger flowers longer style 2,2-3 mm). fewer-flowered racemes with peduncle 1-2 x subtending leaf, erect-ascending pedicels and larger capsule . 2n =18. Fl. 6-8. Streams and springs. 2200-3200m.
