Perennial herbs, 20-45 cm. Leaves narrowly lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, 40-l20x 8-25 mm, mucronate, narrowed into a flattish petiole. Scapes . branched above, branches arcuate-recurved to spreading, subangular below, narrowly winged above. Spikes densely imbricate, clustered on terminal branches. Spikelets 1-flowered, 3-bracteate. Bracts ±herbaceous, keeled, with curved cusps. Outer bract ± triangular, 4-3 mm, unicuspidate, with narrow hyaline margin; middle bract similar, cusps much larger; inner bract ± broadly ovate, tricuspidate, with hyaline margin. Calyx exserted from bracts, narrowly infundibular, tube glabrous, limb 5-lobed, lobes triangular, obtuse; veins attenuating and terminating below margin. Petals whitish. Fl. 5-7. Steppe fallow fields, chalky and serpentine hills, stream beds, 100-750 m.
