Tufted annual, glaucescent, 25-50 cm, Upper leaf blade linear-lanceolate, 1-2 mm broad, ciliate or sparsely pilose. Spike 4-11 cm , narrowly cylindrical with 4-7 spikelets, spike in fruit falling entire. Vestigial spikelets 2. Lateral spikelets with glumes oblong, as long as rachis segments, 9-10 mm, asymmetrical, veins parallel and of unequal width, apex unequally 2-toothed or one of the teeth setaceous-awned Hammer). Florets 4, 2 lower lemmas shortly 2-3-toothed and subexserted. Uppermost spikelet with each glume tapering into a flattened divergent 4-10 em awn 1-1.5 mm broad at base and lacking basal teeth; lemmas nearly hidden by glumes but conspicuously toothed. 2n = 14. Fl. 5-6. Open woodland, rocky hills, dry river banks, steppe, fallow fields, nr s.l.-1230 m.
