Tufted annual, 10-30 cm. Upper leaf blade linear-lanceolate, 1.5-3 mm broad. Spike 12-18 mm , broadly obconical, 2.5-4 mm inc1. awns; spike in fruit shed as a unit. Vestigial spikelets 1. Lateral fertile spikelets 2, partly overlapping; glumes 6-10 mm, subventricose, adpressed-pubescent or scabridulous, with truncate apex bearing 3-4 setaceous awns to 15-25 mm; awns of lower lemmas nearly as long as those of glumes. Uppermost spikelet sterile, 2-3 mm , borne on a rachis segment at least as long as spikelet below it; lemmas bearing awns nearly as long as those of glumes. 2n = 28. Fl. 4-6. Disturbed steppe, rocky plains, gravelly places, calcareous hillsides, seashore, nr s.l.-1200 m.
