Tufted annual, 9-13 cm tall . Spikes c. 2 cm , narrowly obconical-cylindrical, not disarticulating at maturity. Vestigial spikelets 2-3, appearing superimposed to form a fertile column. Glumes 3-5 mm, obovate-oblong, truncate, with scabrid veins somewhat unequally spaced; awns 2-3, 9-24 mm, straighter and stouter than in Ae. kotschyi. Lemma 1.5 x glumes, very unequally awned, the longer awns shorter than those of the subtending glumes, stouter and stiffer than in Ae. kotschyi. Fl.4-5. Sandy coasts.
