Perennial.Rhizomes creeping, with hairy overlapping scales. Flowering stems erect, sometimes densely tufted, to 15 cm, glaucous. Leaves ± distichously congested or rigid ; sheaths villous; blades lanceolate, 1-3 x 0.2-0.3 cm, glaucous, pungent, glabrous or villous-pilose; margins scabridulous. Inflorescence dense, globose or capitate, 0.5-2 cm; spikelets 4-5-flowered, white-villous. Lower glume 1.5 mm, 1-3-veined; upper glume 2 mm, 3-5-veined. Lemma elliptic, 2.5-2.75 mm, villous, apiculate. Fl. 8. Marshes drying out in summer, c. 100 m.
