Prostrate rhizomatous perennial, often rooting at nodes. Flowering stems erect-ascending, 15-25 cm, glabrous or scabridulous, Basal sheaths glabrous, strongly veined; ligule hairy. Leaf blades lanceolate, 1.5-5.5 x 0.1-0.2 cm, acuminate, glaucous, glabrous, pilose or scabridulous; margins always scabridulous, Inflorescence elongate, 1-4 cm, axis scabridulous ; panicle branches 4-13 x 4-6.5 mm, of 12-15 spikelets, lower spikes on same side of axis not overlapping. Spikelets ovoid, 6-9-flowered, 3-4.5 mm. Lower glume 1.7 mm, 3-veined, apiculate; upper glume 1.8 mm, 5-veined. Lemma 9-11-veined, 2.2 x 1.5 mm, apiculate, glabrous, sometimes tinged purplish. Palea hyaline, 2.1 mm, truncate; keels ciliolulate. Anthers oblong, 1-1.5 mm. Ovary glabrous. Fl. 5-10. Limestone cliffs by sea, salt encrusted grassland by crater lakes, at edge of Phragmites marsh, irrigation channels, lagoons, pools in sand dunes, outlets of rivulets, beaches, abandoned cultivated fields, s.l.-1200 m.
