Slender wiry tufted perennial. Stems geniculate at base, to 55 cm, glabrous or finely scabridulous, nodes purplish. Leaf sheaths glabrous or scabridulous; ligule c. 2 mm. Leaf blades folded or convolute, linear-lanceolate, basal and lower to 13 cm, upper ones to 4.5 cm, acuminate, margins scabridulous, adaxial surface pubescent, abaxial glabrous. Inflorescence 5-16 cm, purplish; axis often twisted, glabrous, scabridulous. Pedicels slender, 1.5-2.6 mm. Glumes purplish or pale yellow, lanceolate, lower 5.3-8 mm, upper 7-10 mm, Lemma 8-10.5 mm, purplish or purplish-green, scabridulous, callus bearded. Awn scabridulous, central branch 17-25 mm, laterals shorter, 15-20 mm, Palea scale-like, c. 1 mm. Anthers oblong-linear, c. 1.5 mm, yellow. Fl. 4-7. Volcanic or calcareous rock, in degraded Pinus halepensis or P. brutia forest, s.l.-300 m.
