Annual. Stems 3-30 cm, glabrous. Leaves not overtopping racemes, blades 1-6 mm broad. Raceme spike-like, 2-8 cm, with 1-7 spikelets. Pedicels less than 1 mm. Spikelets laterally compressed, 10-30 mm, glaucescent, glabrous or pilosulous, oblong-cuneate in fruit, axis tardily disarticulating. Glumes unequal, acute and muticous. Lemmas 5-16, oblong-lanceolate, 8-10 mm, prominently veined, ciliolate, aristate; awn erect, 1-2 x lemma. Lodicules ciliolate at apex. Stamens 3. Styles 2. Caryopsis adnate to palea but free from lemma, oblong-ellipsoid; hilum linear, equalling lemma. Fl. 3-5. Macchie, phrygana, calcareous slopes, steppe, olive groves, fields, s.l.-1250 m.
