Strongly rhizomatous perennial, often forming wide stands. Stems 30-80 cm, usually hairless. Leaf blades stiff, erect, 2-7 mm broad, light or yellowish-green, smooth or scabrid. Raceme spike-like, 4-12 cm, ± erect, with 8-22 spikelets, Pedicels 1-2 mm. Spikelets cylindrical, 15-25 mm, narrowly oblong to lanceolate, glabrous. Glumes unequal, glabrous, mucronate. Florets 7-15. Lemmas lanceolate-oblong, acute, 6-10 mm, 7-veined; awn 1-7 mm, erect. Fl. 6-8. Unshaded habitats, mainly grassy hillsides, meadows and limestone pastures, s.l.-2400 m.
