Annual. Stems 10-60 cm, erect or ascending. Leaf sheaths with spreading or deflexed hairs. Leaf blades 5-20 cm x 3-5 mm, softly hairy. Panicle 6-15 x 1-3 cm, narrowly oblong-elliptic to almost linear, stiffly erect, branches and pedicels stiff, shorter than spikelets. Spikelets 25-45 x 4-7 mm, narrowly oblong or lanceolate, usually densely crowded, often subsessile, stiffly erect, adpressed to panicle axis, or only slightly divergent. Glumes narrow, lower 6-9 mm, upper 7-11.5 mm. Lemma 11-18 x 3-5 mm, narrowly lanceolate, with bluntly angled margins and a deep apical sinus flanked by triangular or acuminate teeth; awn 12-20 mm, flattened and often basally twisted and then clasping spikelet, eventually patent, inserted 4-5 mm below apex of lemma. Palea shorter than lemma. Anthers 0.5-1.2 mm. Fl. 4-6. Dry grassland, field margins, s.l.-200 m.
