Annual. Stems 30-90 cm, erect or ascending, usually hairy below panicle. Leaf sheaths with patent hairs, rarely subglabrous. Leaf blades 5-25 cm x 4-7 mm, rough, with scattered soft hairs. Panicle to 20 x 20 cm, lax, spreading or nodding, usually simple; branches 1-4 per node, rough, some equalling or exceeding spikelets. Spikelets 20-45 x 10-20 mm , cuneiform, usually hairy, florets lax. Glumes linear-lanceolate, lower 15-25 mm, upper 20-35 mm. Lemma 20-35 mm, lanceolate, with a deep apical notch and rounded callus; awn 30-65 mm, straight, rough. Palea shorter than lemma. Stamens 2-3; anthers 2-5 mm. Caryopsis 10-15 mm. Fl. 4-7. Dry grassland and slopes, waste ground, margins of cultivated fields, roadsides, s.l.-600 m.
