Small annual. Stems 4-25 cm, erect or geniculate at base. Leaf sheaths hairy. Leaf blades 2-10 cm x 2-3 mm, hairy. Panicle 2-5 cm x 7-20 mm, stiffly erect, fairly dense; branches rigid, shorter than spikelets. Spikelets 10-20 x 5-12 mm, broadly cuneiform, hairy or glabrous, shortly pedicellate or sub sessile. Glumes narrowly lanceolate, lower 6-8 mm, upper 8-11 mm. Lemma 11-12 x 1-1.5 mm, narrowly lanceolate, margins incurved at maturity, apical sinus to 3 mm; awn 10-15 mm, rough, usually slightly divaricate or arcuate when ripe. Palea shorter than lemma. Stamens 3; anthers rarely more than 1 mm. Caryopsis 8-10 mm, very narrow. Fl. 3-5. Dry sandy and rocky places, cultivated land, sometimes on chalk, s.l.-1000 m.
