Annual. Stems to 1 m, erect, ascending or procumbent. Leaf blades to 20 cm x 3-6 mm, hairy; at least lower sheaths hairy. Panicle 1-15 cm, ovoid or oblong-elliptic, ± dense, sometimes with tightly congested spikelets; pedicels shorter than spikelets or spikelets subsessile. Spikelets 8-25 x 2-6 mm, ovate- lanceolate. Glumes lanceolate, lower 2-6 mm, upper 4-9 mm. Lemma 6.5-11 x 2-5 mm, bluntly angled, chartaceous; awn 5-8 mm, usually straight, erect, sometimes divaricate or spreading, Palea shorter than lemma. Anthers 0.2-1.5 mm.
