Annual. Stems 10-35 cm, erect or ascending, usually glabrous. Leaf blades 5-12 cm, x 2-4 mm, glabrous or pubescent; at least lower sheaths hairy. Panicle 3-12 x 2-5 cm, lax, erect or somewhat nodding; branches 10-30 mm, rarely exceeding spikelets, 2-3 per node, hairy, sometimes branched. Spikelets 25-40 x 7-12 mm, cuneiform, with 5-10 florets, hairy or glabrous. Glumes narrow, lower 5-9 mm, upper 9-15 mm. Lemma 12-18 x 3-3.5 mm, margins somewhat inrolled at maturity, apical notch c. 2 mm deep; awn 12-20 mm, straight or weakly divaricate. Palea shorter than lemma. Stamens 2; anthers to 1 mm. Caryopsis 9-12 mm. Fl. 3-7. Pinus brutia forest, Quercus coccifera phrygana, dry grassland, sandy hills, seashore, waste places and as a weed of cultivation, s.l.-1000 m.
